“Look mom, you open WhatsApp like this, then you click on this paperclip…”
I watch the scene from a distance in amazement. You might think I’m watching an explanation for an 85-year-old. But no, this demonstration is for my sister, who is 1.5 years older than me, and who doesn’t know how to send a photo via text. “…and then a menu appears…” her 22-year-old daughter continues to explain in a childish tone. Unbelievable, I think to myself. My sister runs her own accounting firm, but has no idea how to send a photo on WhatsApp.
I pretend to take a sip of my way-too-hot tea to prevent them seeing me snickering. Not because I think she’s stupid – absolutely not – but because I suddenly realize that AI and ChatGPT are simply not for everyone. Apparently there’s a whole generation that doesn’t want to learn ‘prompts’ or understand how Canva works. They just want the job to be done. In an earlier article I was still worried about my own future, but seeing this, my worry is now flying out the window.
I still get questions about how to publish a book, about types of illustrations, spine thickness, bleed and crop marks. But also about using KDP (Amazon), both for softcover and ebook. Of course you can learn everything yourself – nowadays you can really find everything on the internet. From how to pump up the tires of your car to making the perfect bomb. You name it, someone has made a YouTube video about it, written a blog or put it on TikTok.
But do we really want to learn everything ourselves? If you have written a book with great enthusiasm – which has already cost you blood, sweat and tears – do you really want to dive into the world of ChatGPT to learn prompts for illustrations or promotion? Do you want to get frustrated with Canva and eventually squeeze out a mediocre result?
If the answer is ‘No!’, then you are the person who should contact me. With me, you don’t need to know any prompts. You tell me what you want and what you need. While you can focus on more important things, such as a relaxing spa day, a champagne lunch, or maybe just your bookkeeping, I’ll make sure the job gets done professionally.
