From Concept to Creation

It’s a strange process when writing a children’s book that you envision being illustrated. In your head as you keep working through concepts and edits you get this picture in your mind of the story. Literally. What the characters, setting, colors, you name it, will look like.

It brings tremendous joy….and fear! Why fear? Oh, that wee little realization that one who is the writer is not in fact an illustrator.

For many children’s book authors they are also illustrators – but not me.

Bringing a story visually to life is an enormous task. And, you need to take someone else’s words, inspirations, dreams and integrate all of that into something that they can feel content with.

I got bizarrely lucky with meeting Mireille van Yperen. From the get-go she took on my wild ramblings about underwater worlds and creatures and the book series stories I saw in my head and POOF there it was. Naturally, it came together for her in a minute. HAHA 😜 I jest! Not at all the case. Countless hours and iterations from sketches to colors to tiny details to big moments (like when the Jellyfish all of a sudden had a bowtie!) brought this book to life.

So, this post is for her. To highlight her tremendous abilities and to share with everyone who takes a read to know that this is a skill beyond measure and she is a talent beyond a dream. ✏️🎨🖌️

Ah, wee side note – those people I mentioned up above who both write AND illustrate, yep, you guessed it – Mireille is one of them so don’t forget to look her up. 📚

Mireille has a lot of creativity that she used after we had discussed what my wishes were for the book. She really got me moving, by sometimes using a font that I didn’t want in my book. After I had let it rest for a while and we spoke the next day, she explained her choice and I was immediately convinced.
For the cover I had a unique watercolor made that would continue over the spine and Mireille made a beautiful book cover from it, with my desired inner flaps. She is very skilled and very pleasant to work with.
A beautiful book is now at an equally happy printer, because everything was delivered so very neatly by Mireille.
In short, my first book is already fantastic!

I have always had a dream of publishing a book. I didn’t think my dream would come true because I wasn’t sure about the illustration process. I had an idea for my book but I wasn’t sure where or how to start the process of writing my book. In fact, it took me a while to get started and initiate the process. When we venture to put ourselves out there and decide we should build a Website to share what we have to offer with others, it can be intimidating. Unfortunately, my first experience with a different web-designer resulted in financial loss instead of progress with my goals.
After discussing logo ideas with the first designer, I knew I needed to get to work to develop more content. I recording a handful of my songs, and it went slower than I had hoped. When I reached back out to her, she informed me she “no longer” built websites. There was no refund for the large deposit I had made and no work had been done toward building my Website. It amplified the pain I had experienced over the years of not being able to devote as much time as I had wanted to toward my music and art due to losses and other family circumstances. The outcome of my step toward building a website was an added loss as I pondered if I would ever see my dreams come to fruition.
I realized recently that despite the way difficult seasons can stretch on, we need to find ways to be true to what is placed inside of us. So I wanted to set out again to build my website.
I came across Studio Dee Design on Alignable and Mireille and I met over Zoom. She was professional, friendly and a caring listener as I told her my story. After our call and a very reasonable quote, which was less than the large deposit I had lost with the initial former web designer, I agreed to begin the Website.
Mireille quickly brought to life the features I had wanted for my Website. And where I didn’t know how to visualize aspects of the Website, her creativity kicked into gear. I loved her ideas and thought, “this is absolutely perfect!” If I wanted to tweak something, she made the change right away. Her attentiveness, creativity and reliability was refreshing after my first experience.
I now have the beginning of a Website that makes my heart race with possibilities! It breathed new hope and unearthed dreams that had been buried over the years. I am so grateful to be working with Mireille. This is the jumpstart I needed to begin again with the dreams I have had for so long!

The Toyota MR2 Club Nederland is an association of and for owners of a Toyota MR2. Three models of this sporty two-seater with a mid-engine were released successively between 1984 and 2005. Since its foundation in 1992, the Club has published a Club magazine four times a year. First in A5 and from 2017 in A4 format.

Only a few people are working together to create the magazine. It is volunteer work and not many people are willing to do that. The moment someone drops out, a problem immediately arises. And that’s exactly what happened at the end of 2021. The person who took care of the design suddenly quit. Nobody else knew how to take over and the production of the magazine was on hold.

While looking for a solution, we came across the site of DTP-hulp.nl. In the portfolio, we saw several products that had many similarities with our magazine. Unlike the others we emailed, Mireille responded almost immediately. From the first moment, we were very pleasant to contact. We liked the quote she sent us. Mireille actively participates in the search for solutions and is fast and flexible. The product of the first collaboration was a great success.

Because we were still not able to do it ourselves, we asked Mireille to also shape the second song. This edition needed a festive touch. The Club is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Yet again was this anniversary issue also very successful.
Not to make this story too long; we are very happy with Mireille’s help and will recommend her services to anyone who asks us. We already did!!!

I am writing this letter as a reference for Mrs. Mireille van Yperen.
I first met Mrs. van Yperen on an online forum in 2002 at which she was assigned as a graphic designer and website
designer.
I was busy putting together a business that involved motorcycle tours in South Africa and I needed a website and
brochures designed.
I was immediately impressed by the professionalism of Mrs. Yperen in understanding (and the delivering) on the rather
specific requirements for my website.
The website required specific links, online payment processing and online bookings to be processed. The website was
an amazing success largely due to her ability to plan and manage a project of this size (from a technical and design
point of view).
Since that first year, I have repeatedly called upon Mrs. van Yperen to assist with all our graphic design and website
requirements, and have also subcontracted work that I have passed onto her.
I have always found her to be exceptionally competent, highly skilled and professional in all our dealings. She has a very
special (and wide) skill set and has always consistently delivered a very high quality product.
As a large company, this quality is obviously very important to us. She recently completed a large video-training project
for us that was delivered on time and within budget.
I have no doubt that Mrs. van Yperen would be an excellent (if not the BEST) candidate for any website or graphic

In 2001 my Dutch Company, G-force Consulting Engineers BV, utilized the services of DTPH to set-up our Web Site www.g-forcebv.com. As a newly established, small sized business, it was essential to attract clients of a unique nature since the Environmental “oily waste clean-up” products we designed and manufactured for sale were the first of a kind in the industry we represented.
